FAQ Before Purchase

Dutch & Dutch 8c speakers perform best when they are placed relatively close to the rear wall. 10 to 50 cm (4 to 20 in.) will give you the best performance. You can use the app to select the distance to the rear wall, and the app will automatically adjust the 8c internal settings accordingly. This will give you the best listening experience possible.

Absolutely! The app allows you to optimize the speakers according to your specific situation. You can for example filter out room modes and compensate for overdamped frequencies.

Yes as long as the glass is solid, sturdy and has enough girth. The glass should not be able to resonate from the bass energy that is bounced off the surface coming from the boundary coupled subwoofers.

Yes, as long as you make sure that the sides of the 8c are not blocked by any obstacles closer than 30 cm’s (12 inches) to the cabinet. And the back of the cabinet has a distance of 10 to 50 cm’s (4 to 20 inches) to the wall behind the cabinets.

The 8c can be connected to either digital (AES3) or (balanced) analog sources. It has a male XLR input that can be used to present these signals to the 8c. Make sure the correct preset is selected. The 8c has a -10 dBV analog input, a +4 dBu analog input and an AES3 digital input. Consumer-grade equipment with a relatively low output voltage usually works best with the -10 dBV setting. Professional equipment with a higher output voltage usually works best with the +4 dBu setting. AES3 digital input is for use with digital sources with a balanced output, AES3 or AES/EBU.

Unbalanced sources can be used with the 8c, but proper functioning with regard to hum and noise is not guaranteed. Dutch & Dutch recommends that balanced sources be used in order to obtain optimal gain and sound quality. If the unbalanced equipment is properly designed and grounded, an adapter cable can be used. Within that cable pins, 1 and 3 should be tight together.

8c’s supports PCM up to 96 kHz / 24 bits on its digital AES3 input. 8c’s with serial numbers above SN.2xxx supports PCM up to 192 kHz / 24 bits on its digital AES3 input. The streaming input on all models supports samples rates up to 192 kHz / 24 bits.

The normal setting is Linear Phase Mode. In Linear Phase Mode the 8c uses an FIR filter that corrects the phase distortion caused by the Linkwitz-Riley 4th order crossovers at 100 Hz and 1250 Hz, thereby linearizing the phase response, which gives the 8c’s exceptional transient response and impulse response. The Linkwitz-Riley crossover delays some frequencies more than others and the FIR filter adds a bit of delay to all but the ‘slowest’ frequencies, such that all frequencies have the same amount of delay and thus arrive at the listener’s ears at the exact same moment. In Linear Phase Mode the 8c’s have a latency of around 33.2 ms. Use this mode when latency is not an issue, such as listening to music in a domestic situation, during mixing or mastering. Usually, the Linear Phase Mode works well with movies too, because latency is less than a single frame in a movie.

When in Low Latency Mode, the 8c’s don’t have a flat phase response. The latency is about 3.1 ms. Use this setting for live tracking and perhaps if lower latency is required for integration with other speakers in a home theatre.

The audible difference between Linear Phase Mode and the non-corrected phase is subtle but worthwhile. Some listeners appear to be more sensitive to it than others.

The 8c was originally designed for domestic use with the vision that good, musical sound should be combinable with ease of use via contemporary app control.
The cardioid dispersion pattern design contributed to the overall musical experience without too much influence of the room acoustics.
This is why we state  “Make the room disappear”.
Recognized by studio engineers who were used to build a room around the loudspeakers.
So over the last year, we had equal success in both studio and domestic environments.

The 8c has 4 M6 threads on its bottom side. These can be used to secure the speaker to a stand. The stand offered by Dutch & Dutch is shipped including bolts and tools to secure the 8c to this stand. If you want to secure your 8c to another stand, please download the dimension and position of the M6 threads. Please note that these are standard M6 threads with a pitch of 1mm.

FAQ After Purchase

You only use the AES terminator when you are using an AES source. The AES plug is placed at the end of the signal chain. Your first speaker gets a signal from the AES source, the next speaker is connected via the ‘thru’ port on the first speaker. Plug the AES terminator into the second speaker, in the ‘thru’ port. The AES protocol requires a terminator at the end of the line, without a terminator chances are that AES won’t work.

AES3 is a standard for the exchange of digital audio signals between professional audio devices. To connect an AES3 source to the 8c’s, use a balanced 3-conductor cable of 110-ohm twisted pairs cabling with XLR connectors. There should be one cable between the source and the shared analog and digital input of the first 8c. There should be a second cable between the first 8c’s THRU output and the second 8c’s shared input. Use an AES3-terminator (supplied with every pair of 8c’s) on the THRU output of the last 8c in the chain.

In the Dutch & Dutch app, go to settings for each individual 8c in the system. Set the placement of each 8c correctly, i.e. left for left and right for the 8c on the right.

Set the 8c’s input to AES using the button on the back of the 8c.

In most use-cases, it is recommended to use the -10 dBV / High Gain input level setting. The +4 dBu / Low Gain setting is recommended only in one very specific situation.

The +4 dBu input has a low internal gain and is intended for high-power signal sources such as mixing desks and some audio interfaces. The +4 dBu input is recommended on the conditions that you are both using such a device that is capable of signals in the range of up to 22 dBu, and that you control the volume level by means of the volume control in the 8c itself, i.e. which is controlled with the lanspeaker app.

In all other circumstances, both domestic and studio, we recommend the use of the -10 dBV input. This input has almost 12 dB higher internal gain than the +4 dBu input. Do you want to control the volume ahead of the 8c? Then turn down the volume in the 8c as much as possible, without having to clip the source in order to play loud enough. A setting of – 10 dBV is often a good starting point. This procedure ensures the best possible signal to noise ratio. Do you want to control the volume in the 8c’s themselves, then turn the source’s volume all the way up, just below the point of clipping.

Be careful with turning the gain in lanspeaker up higher than 0 dB. When the gain in lanspeaker is set at 0 dB and there is no input signal, the noise should be at least 118 dB down. With every dB of gain you add, you don’t only increase the level of the signal, but also of the noise. If you need more loudness, first see if you can increase the gain earlier in the chain before you increase the level at the last stage.

The power consumption of the 8c in sleep* mode is 7 watts. The power consumption of the 8c in on mode without input signal is 20 watts. The power consumption of the 8c when powered off by the mains switch is 0 watts.

*We specifically call this sleep mode and not standby since in some countries standby power draw needs to be 1 watt or less. For the 8c this is unachievable since our processor needs to be powered on during sleep mode while waiting to recieve wake up on LAN messages.
